Digital Vegetation for Maxwell

Hi!
Over the last few weeks I dedicated myself to the creation of digital vegetation. I found a lot of the available trees to not be up to the standards I needed so I went out and created a few myself. I took hundreds of photos, stitched bark textures together and built librarys for leaves that actually belong to the tree and not something generic. Also something I noticed is that many 3d trees carry huge leaves to cover the fact that they are too few. A huge tree does not have huge leaves, it diminishes the impression of size.
On all trees you'll find 3 different kind of leaves, alternate bark textures and corresponding normalmaps for everything. They use clipmapped single sided SSS for shading and clear very fast.

So far I have built 3 librarys but each tree is also available indivudually:

wow! did you create these by hand or use a program to generate them?

Yes, I use a special software called GrowFX.

http://exlevel.com/features/

It is fantastic, but hugely complex and requires quite some time to get used to. I highly recommend it though, the possibilities are vast.

ben very interesting, did not know this software before, probably because max only.
apparently, the "hq plants" guy used it as well to generate his plants and grasses collections, which are very recommendable, btw...
bought some of them and converted the models i needed from c4d to LW/modo - which was quite easy because of the well structured models.

what you say is true Markus, a lot of commercially available tree collections are done with this software.
It took me while of research to hunt down this software, it is not very well known. We use it for quite some time now at the office, but a lot of the time the collections that are already available suffice (no maxwell version though).
On the other hand sometimes they don't so that's why I made my own models. ;)

Another vote for GrowFX. Daunting learning curve but the potential is pretty amazing and support is excellent.

Very nice trees Ben!
