[Audio] Play chunks of WAV files controlled by Midi?

I'm a complete noob when it comes to audio applications; Aside from some simple trimming and mixing in Audacity, i haven't done anything. For a fun project i want to take a recognizable midi track and replace the usual electronic instruments with short pieces of actual audio recordings (e.g. voices, real world sounds) and ideally have their pitch affected too by the notes.

I'm pretty sure this is possible, but i have no idea where to start. My google searches don't yield any good results, probably because i don't know what terms to look for. If you could point me to some programs that can do this, and tell me how the thing i'm trying to do is called (e.g. "audio synthesis xyz"?), that'd be great! :o

Thanks a lot.

I guess you're looking for the midi equivalent of legendary SoundTracker of Amiga :)

There are plenty of programs that will let you do this for Mac/PC.

Suggest as a starting point you might try:

Ableton Live

or

Propellerheads Reason

Both have demo versions for you to try.

Will take a small amount of time to learn but both can do this kind of thing with ease.

Thanks guys, i'm looking into Reason at the moment and had (limited) success already. I felt like opening my first 3d application: quite lost!

Hi Adrian,

IMO Abelton Live is easier to understand, more "computer" oriented than Reason, which looks aimed more at oldschool electronic musicians / sound engineer.. so maybe give it a try to compare early !
