for the same configuration price, what should you choose:

Single i7 980x -32 nm- 3.33 Ghz/6 cores/24 Gb/HD 5870 (PC selfmade ± 4.000 EUR) > 12 cores in multi-threading
Single Xeon W3680 -3nm- 3.33 Ghz/6 cores/8 Gb/HD 5870 (New MacPro Westmere = 4.224 EUR) > 12 cores in multi-threading
Dual Xeon E5620 -32nm- 2.40 Ghz/2x4 cores/12 Gb/HD 5870 (New MacPro Westmere = 4.098 EUR) > 16 cores in multi-threading

What are your advices? What will speed-up maxwell?

4000€ ...i think this is definitely too much for every option! Is this with 500GB+ SSD?!? Then it would be ok i think...

I'm planning a new workstation too these days and had considered the same options, but everything with overclocked cpu's.
For me there are too many problems overclocking a dual cpu board atm so i decided to take the 980x and push him to 4-4,5GHz (watercooled)
If you don't want to clock your system, the 980x costs too much and a dual setup is ok i think ...but not for more than 2500-3000€!

yes, the full option (2 SSD intel postville / Evga 4 way sli / 24 gb / Velociraptor
I am new to Pc (not so new... my first pc was a Sinclar Zx and O.C sound funny... so for the 980x i will probably try some oc.

I am debating the same thing. For 3D rendering I'm not sure a Xeon does anything more than a core i7. Maybe for more types of multitasking a Xeon is more powerful??, but for simple multi threaded rendering the i7 may be the better value.

Some advice from nextlimit?

I am a mac guy, but use windows for Solidworks/Maxwell. I just realized another option other than the new Macpro. I can get a dell XPS 9100 with the core i7X980, 8GB ram, ATI 5870 for $2500, then get a new iMac 27in with core i5 for $2000 total = $4500 Then I can do my Adobe work on the Mac and just have the Dell for 3D.

no, you can still overclock it raising the BCLK like you do with every "normal" non Extreme i7 like the 920.
But i think only ~12% $ less for loosing the free multiplier is not enough... and i think the Extreme CPUs
are more selected.
