If a workload justifies this -- then yay, otherwise, big nay. 5K is a lot of jack to be sitting around just looking cool.
Generally speaking though, ...pretty sweet, love the size.
Would love to see the board that goes into that thing, ..I'm guessing it'd be some kind of passive blade-like component or maybe a purely proprietary Boxx-thing. Cool nevertheless.

my boxx rep mentioned this to me a few weeks ago after a brief conversation about the future of gpu. all i can say is once you go boxx, you'll never buy a different machine. supreme perforformance, supreme customer service, and supreme capability.......... hell, tell them tom rusteberg sent you so i can rack up some rewards points and get a few of these for the studio. i gaurantee you'll be happy with any boxx product.

How would it compare with the
i7-980x option?

Yes, looks very nice - i would like to see the board too...
So what do you get for the $5000 you mentioned? (cpu+ram)

You can hit that button to customize and get a price. When it asks you for an email, just say 'no thanks,' it will move on to the price customizer.
I think you get something like 12 procs at 2.66 GHz each and 12 Gig RAM for $5400 or something.
Here are specs

The nice thing if you are a freelancer is you can travel with it in a messenger bag.
The downside, I guess, is that it is not a general computer, and it's not cheap.
I was also thinking about building a general computer in the $3500 range based on i7-980x

$6300 for a dual six core 2,66ghz with only 6gb ram and 160gb hdd and win7 pro!
You can easily build two Systems with these Specs for this money!!! (~2150€ for one)
Yes, they would be normal big towers but this price is insane...

$6300 for ony 6 GB ram? Is that what it worked out to be?
That is high.
I'm just sort of bummed on this freelance job because I'm being asked to render more than the resources they are giving me allow, and I have this fantasy of having a little render farm in a shoulder bag.

for something cheap&portable, i recommend this case, it has excellent cooling and can hold two full length pci-e x16 cards.
(gpu and stuff...)

in µ-atx!
built 3 of these 2 years ago, based on asus mobos and q6600 clocked to ~3.4
they were 700€ per piece and are still running smooth as ever..
nowadays i'd still get a µ-atx i7 setup with 12GB and a 920.. as i calculated it starts at about ~800€ (complete system incl. 74gb raptor drive)
so for ~800€ and assuming that you clock the i7 to a 24/7 stable config of ~3.6 - 3.8 ghz you will get a Benchwell of 1300 +

If I add the fastest Xeon they offer (5670) -which is still 300MHz below the desktop I7 980X- and add another 6GB of RAM to a total of 12GB I arrive at insane 8k+ dollars!! You could easily build around 8-10 machines with I7 920 that running with 40 physical cores and 80 threads would totally tear this system to shreds.
Even at 5k $ I guess you pay a lot for the looks and coolness. I bet the service and quality of Boxx systems is great, but for me it would never be worth a 100% increase in price.

Don't forget about the cost of additional software licenses!

good point... yes, the needed licenses should be added to the calculation... good to have some additional licenses waiting for an upgrade

true.. but even then, the more expensive server ram and the "unoverclockable" xeon, make a more expensive machine in terms of render power.
