Trees...

I am looking at investing in some form of tree generation package. I have been eyeing Onyx and Xfrog. Does anyone have recommendations or other options?
Also I am interested in recepies for leaves. Is there any simple way of generating good single side SSS materials for leaves without handpainting or otherwise creating multiple maps for the different channels. Ideally I would like to get by with just the colormap. The trees in question will be viewed from a distance.

I've seen Onyx and it is very good... I don't know about Xfrog... If you will see your trees from a distance, then don't use maps.. Onyx has misc leaves shapes and you can just use a color or a 2-3 layer mxm with similar colors....
If you use MAX, the new MaxwellProxy object is ideal for scenes with many and similar trees...
However, I think you should take a look at many free 3d trees from misc sites...

Also, there are some cheaper and even open source solutions like
http://ngplant.sourceforge.net/
http://arbaro.sourceforge.net/
http://www.treegenerator.com/gallery.htm
http://www.kurtz-fernhout.com/PlantStudio/index.htm (old)
For Max users...The best solution is FORESTPACK PRO... from
http://www.itoosoft.com.... I use it all the time and you 've got to check this... No expensive either...

in regards to leaf recipe, here is a good one using only one color map, an alpha map, and one layer

though, you'll have to choose your battle over how to get the trees...

Eric,
there is a text link like:
DOWNLOAD ZIP-RAR * 3D Model File - yourModel.zip
under the description of the model you wish to download.
hope this helps
