I'm trying to test the video capabilities of two of my cameras (Canon 5D MII, and Nikon D300s).
So, I did a couple of test videos and now I'm trying to put them together.

My first reaction was to use photoshop CS4 (as I am familiar with it).. but after doing some 10 sec tests and trying to save it in mov format, the files skyrocket from 100mb to 8.55 GB. I tried other formats but the quality was horrible. Then a friend recommend me Vegas Pro

I did some small test in Vegas and saved them as wmv with some success, but I noticed that when I was rendering the video, the computer was not maxout at all (10% cpu usage)
I have core I7 920 (but running vista 32 )

When I tried doing a 5min test, it wouldn't do anything... I left it for 2 hours and it was still at 0% rendering and the completion time kept climbing from: 1 hour, to 5 hours, to 8 hours, to 20 hours..... for 5 freaking minutes of video?!) My ram seemed almost maxout but my cpu usage was at 0%..

Any help would be really appreciate!!!

what's your native 3d app? If you're using max, then you can save the sequences as single frames (png/jpg sequence) and import them in as your background image in max using an ifl (image file list, which generates from your background image dialogue). from there you can render out sequences to your desired format/compression. i'm sure other large 3d host apps have similar ability.... not familiar with vegas, but you could try this as an alternative.

Just use Quicktime....

Something must have gone wrong. You should be able to export from AE just fine. If the footage 1080p? If they haven't removed the MainConcept MPEG encoder in CS4, you should try that. Otherwise try it over Quicktime, as Herve suggested. WMV is a safe bet in many cases, but i haven't tried it with full HD videos.

List your export settings, better yet post a screenshot.

well, I just tried rendered as a image sequence (in Vegas Pro) and it was going well, until it said: system is low on memory and crashed

I only have the free quicktime ... I imagine you guys are talking about the pro version.

I think, I need to install some type of windows 64 and use all 6 GB of ram

The video footage is 1080p and 720p, the final out put is 720p
I ill do a test on "MainConcept MPEG encoder" nest

I did a test in mpeg-4 on Photoshop CS4. The size was very decent, but no audio (i'll have to figure out what happened)

What really worries me is how Photoshop only used 1/2 core to render the video. WTF!?

BTW when I use maxwell, it renders fine using all 4 cores (+ 4 HT)

I just saw you're using Photoshop CS4, i totally misread your first post because i didn't associate PS with Video. I'm afraid i can't help ya there buddy.

Thousands of dollars in Photography equipment, thousands of dollar in computer hardware, using the greatest software on earth (maxwell , photoshop....) Running windows vista 32 (I think it obvious, I don't like to spend money on M$soft)

QT pro is what, $30 or something like?
Get it and you will save yourself hours of heartache in CS4...........

If he just wants to encode, free software will do just as well (AviDemux, VDub, SUPER etc.). I think the question was whether there's a way to export good video from his host application, with postwork applied.

Leo: if you can export to frames (image sequence) and you're cool with that, you can use one of the tools i mentioned to make a video. They have codecs that support threading. At least better than PS.

I think my problem, is that I'm running out of ram on Vegas Pro.... So, I'll have to check into windows 7 x64 or something (well, at least hope that is the problem)

I have some good news and bad news..

The good news is that I was able to render the 5min video in 10min using Vegas Pro

The bad news is that I can only testdrive Windows 7 x64 for 29 more days

Doesn't M$ offer Windows 7 at a low price to lure customers? Maybe a business version without all the eye candy crap, but which supports your beefy system?

I'm still on XP, don't want to give it up yet
