Illy Crop / Bounding Box Question

Hey, hope someone here's savvy enough with Illustrator to help me out...
Intro:I'm doing a poster with about 40 photos on it, that all need cropping still applied. For some, a significant portion of the image is irrelevant. Now I use the "Mask" command on a placed image (linked, not embedded) and then adjust the rectangle to give me the crop I need.
Problem: I can only pick the topmost cropped image with the mouse when I click somewhere within the pre-crop image's boundingbox. I.e. the bounding box doesn't match the image I see. This makes it very tedious to select images to move around and resize.
Question:Is there a way to tell Illy to only use the visible part of an object for picking and bounding box creation? How are other people doing this?
