Another "camera suggestion" thread.

Hi forum!

Some friends and I are planning to give as wedding present to two friends, that are getting married, a good camera + lens/es + bag + maybe tripod + memory card. We have a budget of around 1400€; They are no professional, but they appreciate what a good camera can give. So, we are looking for an all terrain camera, with auto-everything so it's easy to handle, but being able to control everything manually also if you want, with good quality, big sensor, good range of ISO and speed,...

I'm quite lost not only with the model but also with the brand of body and lense as I have never bought a good DSLR; sadly I've always used compact cameras and lately phone cameras (does technology makes better or worse? )

I would like to know which would be your prefered combo for starters with some knowledge, or maybe just what would you buy with that budget; a small "why" would be great :)

Thanks a lot guys and gals.

F.

I was definitely no photographer when I started using my D80 not too long ago and I LOVE IT. It's easy to get started with auto settings, and seems to respond good to the user. I'd suggest checking out the d90 if you've got a budget like that. You could get that brand new with the kit lens for around that price, maybe less online. Amazon might offer a package deal, with tripod, bag etc....

Sorry, not much help but that's my extent of camera knowledge :)

I got a Nikon D40, which came with a 18-55mm lens; at the same time, I also got Nikon's 55-200mm lens and their D40 camera bag which came with an extra battery. In total, that was a bit more than 1K USD, and the setup will be more than good enough for me for a long time. That's less than your target spending amount, so I suppose you could step up to a more expensive camera, lens, or else just throw in a nice bottle of wine. :)

Dunno, ...but I do know that should the event arise, you'll be getting a wedding invite from me.

Hi Fernando!
I have a Nikon D70 plus some lenses for different situations: a good Nikkor 50mm, a good Sigma 15-21 (from my old 601), another sigma 18-125, and a Tamron 18-250
The best choice for a starter would be something like Nikon D40 or D60 (different resolution in Mp, but very similar) plus a wide range tele, like my sigma 18-125 or so (approx 150€), or something in the other side: the Canon EOS 400D or 450D, with the same lenses I recomended for the Nikon (with different mount)
You can take a look for prices in www.fotoboom.com

We can talk a bit later

One of the architects here at work has Nikon D80. He recently went to Yosemite this winter and the pictures he took and showed me were nothing short of amazing. So i would go with either a d80 or the d90 if your wallet will allow......Or the wife. :D

I've got myself an Olympus E420 plus a Sigma zoom lens.

I'ts small and compact and very easy to use - I love it. Being a 4 thirds lens system, the lenses are much cheaper and more compact and their focal lengths are approximately double the standard 35mm film system - so a 200 telephoto lens is the equivalent to a 400mm lens on old 35mm film system. So its possible with your budget to get some fast powerfull zoom lenses or even the really nice small pancake lens.

looks cool and would be a great wedding present!

The price - £350 for camera + stock zoom lens or compact pancake lens.

There are models further up the range and also further down the range - to suit your pocket.

Try one out in shop - they are really nice in the hand

sorry to get your hopes up - the £350 price tag is for an e420 - not an EP1 :D :(

But still maybe still worth considering .
