Opinions on the new MacBook Pro 17"...

...with the faster processor (2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo). Is it ok for Maxwell/Rhino? My greatest concern is that it might overheat when rendering (so I've heard). True? In that case it would be useless for Maxwell. Any opinions about Rhino/Maxwell on OS X or/and Vista (Bootcamp) on this machine?
I'm going to do all major renderings on my desktop, but I might still need to use my laptop now and then for rendering also...
Thanks!
Philip

guess you need a mac... if not i'd give the cash for this machine, with QuadCore and Quadro onboard, perfect for maxwell and rhino!

Yes, I'd like to test iRhino and OS X... and I really appreciate the clean design as well. Of course - the one you suggested 'looks' technically better, hmmm...
Anyway... anybody heard about the overheating problem?
Thanks!

There was a firmware update the other day that fixed a few overheating/fan issues on the 15" but i don't know if there was one for the 17".
Never had any problems with maxwell on my macbook, but it's only 2.6GHz.

Great! Thanks Sampson! Anybody else - anyone with the 17"? I wonder if I should stick with the slower (cooler and cheaper) processor or go for the quicker...?

I have nothing, but i can imagine that the slightly bigger case the 17" must have means it's not overheating as fast as a smaller model with a smaller screen and case. But that's just my wild guess..

Yeah, it's just (?) a rumour I heard on the Rhino newsgroup - from a person who didn't own one (I think), so it would be nice to get a confirmation (or not) from someone who actually have the machine.

Well i just tested it with a friends 15" MacBook Pro and it gets pretty hot before the fan jumps in, but no problem at all. If you want to leave it running just take care that it gets enough air, maybe put it up 2-3 cm so the air can go underneath and take the heat away.

The fan update is also available for the 17.
I've had a previous-gen 17" MBP rendering on my Maxwell farm. It gets hot but I've never had one overheat. Just make sure its on a flat surface with proper ventilation.

Thank you all for the info! I guess I can take the step into the Mac-world then...
