Graphene 1Thz Processor

Realtime everything -- I think we might see it sooner than later.

Imagine 8-cores @ 1Thz(1000 Ghz not even overclocked..lol.) on a desktop ! ...or a render farm with 100 cores.

It's kind of frightening really .... with that kind of processing, well who knows, ..but things would change.

Yeah, technology's the one thing that really works and evolves at a fast pace. It's like magic to the outsider. I wish the mind was that reliable :x

I think software will develop into the procedural direction once processing power is abundant. Looks to me like the best way to aid creative work using this dumb but fast mechanism.

The clock frequencies of today's PC processors are starting to close in on 4GHz (again) and with extreme cooling they can be pushed to beyond 6GHz, which is enough to make some loose their breath. This isn't much though when you consider the research presented at MIT. Scientists at the renowned American university has designed a microchip that can process data at unsurpassed speeds. They claim that its new chipset will be able to operate at unimaginable 500-1000GHz, in other words at Terahertz levels.
The substance used is carbon and it is the very key to the high frequencies. The researchers managed to build a circuit using the graphene, made from a single layer of carbon. The circuit consisting of only one lonely transistor will be used for frequency multiplication and by creating a pure signal with no need for filtration it will be able to achieve these frequencies without problems.
Researchers have been investigating the potential of graphene since the "discovery" in 2004 and the unveiled use that could actually reach the market relatively soon.




It all comes down to making graphene compatible with wafer manufacturing and Tom Palacios, professor at MIT, believes that we will see graphene-based chips in 1-2 years.
"In physics today, graphene is, arguably, the most exciting topic," Palacios says. It is the strongest material ever discovered, and also has a number of unsurpassed electrical properties, such as "mobility" -- the ease with which electrons can start moving in the material, key to use in electronics -- which is 100 times that of silicon, the standard material of computer chips."

Nobody is immune. I paid a little under $5K to build the 2X Xeon 5345 machine. :shock: We can't win....
Advice: Take the beating, like it, ..go home, ...render something and hope to make enough money with your inferior hardware to buy some more soon-to-be inferior hardware. lol.


Wasn't it like an hour ago that Conroe C2D's was the sweetest thing around ? :lol:

The only problem is that they're currently running a little hot, ..so a totally new cpu cooler has to be developed.

Edward Wilson, an engineer from Thermaltake is already at work on the development for the new cooler, "At present we have achieved stable temp settings at full load, ..but we're still having problems with the potential of users being sucked into the fan blades and getting shredded into bio-geek matter, ..but were hopeful to have a safe and working unit by years end."
