Hey guys,

So after finishing a loooong project I decided to spend my two free weeks trying to learn Houdini, and in doing so put together this video for their current challenge. The competition actually started back at the beginning of February, so I had a little less time than everyone else, but I'm still pretty happy with the result

The video now stays on Youtube for a month, after which it is judged on ratings, comments and general Houdininess (it's a word...) There are two prizes, one for funniest and one for most realistic. This is me pretty much just posting it everywhere I can to try and convince a few more people to rate it (preferably highly )

Looks pretty good for using a new software. I like the first few seconds the best, just the building in the rain. Nice cam movement.

tell us about houdini .. i'm really interested in it .. how did you pick it up that fast ? tutorials ? dvds ?

Thanks guys Sorry about the late reply but I've been all over the place for the last few days.

Personally I've loved learning Houdini. The fact that every single thing is pretty much infinitely customisable allows for a huge amount of creative freedom - providing you can get past the very steep initial learning curve. I followed the free fundamentals course over at 3DBuzz.com to learn the basics (what the different types of networks are for, how to navigate around etc...) The rest of the time was spent searching for threads on specific things I needed to accomplish, and breaking down other people's scenes to see what makes them tick.

I'm already planning my next few shots (I've just purchased a Canon HV30 and am feeling productive ) and I've found that I've already kind of slipped into the Houdini mindset when thinking about how to accomplish them. Coming from a Maya background, Houdini is, at least for now, VERY cool. I'd really recommend checking it out if you have a few hours free.

did you check out the gnomon dvds or those from digital tutors ?

i guess i'll buy those all ..

i've been searching so long for a fully procedural system, but i never really could take the dive so far.

i hope to have the maxwell v1.7 compiled for houdini 10 soon. there is a bug in the win64 compiler they are looking into, stay tuned for more info soon
