Audio Software Recommendation

I need some solid guidance ..

I want to see what recommendations you guys have for software based audio mixing/recording.

For whatever reason I never did jump into pc audio stuff early on and just kept on with my old school hardware -- which I do fine with, ..but I need to expand my horizons !

Roland VS-1880 w/2 VS8F-2's
Ensoniq dp/4 | Lexicon Vortex
Tascam CDRW700 | Denon dual cass/CD | Carver Amp
Fender Super 60
Roland R-70 drum machine
JBL 4206 monitors
Handful of guitars, Fender & Ibanez.
Slew of mics and other stuff ..

Also: I have a Toshiba Satellite dual-core 1.7ghz laptop that I never use .. is it good enough for this kind of thing ?

Pro-tools, Cubase, Acid ..... I'm clueless. Googling and reading is no help. I need real world perspectives.

recommendations / experience please .... :)

I'm not much of a musician, but my brother and father are both musicians and my father plays the accordion and he uses MakeMusic Finale for notation stuff. It might not be something you do..
My brother he plays synths (keyboards) and he uses Cubase for midi and all that. There are ofcourse other apps and plugins which are great but i know these two are good for musicians. :) sorry can't give you more detailed info as this area is unfortunately beyond me.

ivox,

you should start with a new Line 6 POD Studio (the one with 2xline, 2xmic +phantom power). great stuff for driving your guitar straight into the pc. with sound, I mean it.

As for the recording software go for CUBASE or ADOBE AUDITION. Both are easy to use, you can lear them in 2-3 days so get the demos and choose one;)

overall it's not the case of base software that you use, but the plugins that go along with it. the guy at our local studio uses Waves and PSP (Vintage Warmer). here are a few samples we recorded for fun 1-2 yrs ago. www.virb.com/kazdys -> go for "Mala Czarna" / "Piekne Lato".

Hope that was helpful;)

My own route is probably a bit heath-robinson, but it seems to work:

On the PC: Propellerhead Reason/re-cycle. [just used for fixing loops, backing track composition etc].....which gets ripped to:
Multitrack: BR-1180 [where all the analogue stuff goes in, guitars etc].

I also have a line6 Pod, which is good for getting 'approximations' quickly........but I much prefer the sound of my Trace Elliot combo, miked up with an SM57.....both clean and dirty, it just sounds better.

Wouldn't like to bet on that laptop being good enough, I think it all depends just how much you intend to throw at it.........I have a friend who uses Abelton Live [mac]........he swears by it, says there's nothing better.

Right on the money... I use the Line 6 Pods and LOVE them. I've been using Adobe Audition since it was "CoolEdit"...

Take a look at this http://www.reaper.fm/ it's FREE... I've been playing with it and really can't believe it.

Hey Ivox,

not that i have much experience with production (just spinnin' vinyl on two decks) but i have a friend who earns his living with production jobs, he once showed me this software....a truly crazy piece of programming.... says there is nothing like it ....too much to tell here just watch the video, you'll get the point easily:
