Hi,

I ask me, what is the best way to create crinkle textures for leather seats and cloth?

Here a real world example:

For my last project I create a texture from photos. But maybe better methods/tools are available? Or doe's somebody know some tutorials?

Ciao,
Micha

If you have a scanner, I'd scan a cloth and turn it into a normal map.

A software like Crazy bump extrapolates real bumps/displace/normal maps from the diffuse map

You could use sculpting tools like ZBrush or Mudbox to sculpt your mesh, then bake normal maps/displacement maps. I know a lot of people who create organic models do it this way for fabric/clothes.

Thanks for the hints. My idea was, that it could be possible to draw creases and crinkle perphotoshop. I found, that the smear finger tool is a good helper for random crinkles. But I found no way to draw a hight shape like shown in this profile sktech:

I create a 3D rotation object that looks like the crease and create a hight map from it.

The problem is, if I use the hight map as brush, than I get no continous crease, I get separate brush points. Doe's somebody know, what I have done wrong?

Ah, I found an option like "distance" (Abstand in my german PS). But if I set a lower distance, than than I lost the fine peak in the middle of the brush. At distance 0 the original brush profile is complete destroyed. :?

Hi Micha !

Nice results with the smudge ! You can try using the Ajust>Curves to modify the grayscale gradient of your image. It might be possible to make sharper peeks. Maybe do it in high res to keep a nice gradient for the texture.

Yes, work in 16 bit.
