Sometimes these tonemapped HDR images look more like renders than photos. It actually gives some good tips on how to make your renders look more photoreal.

So to look more photoreal Maxwell should produce a more narrow dynamic range, like most cameras?

I can't stand HDR produced images...

Yeah I've never understood the joy of it really...

I'm only interested in it because I want to make my own project specific HDR-maps sometimes...

I think it's a great tool for retouching and regaining lost detail (less noise) where it really matters/hurts. A good example is the retaining of color vibrance and cloud detail in the skies, while not having a terribly underexposed subject in front of it.

These generic, automated merges look terrible indeed but then again you could abuse any technology like that.
