I am in the process of taking the internal hard drive out of my laptop.

I am going to be purchasing a hard drive caddy so that I can still use the old hard drive

I would like to be able to boot from my old hard drive while it is in the Caddy.
Is this possible?

One person at Dell told me it was not a problem but everyone else tells me it is impossible. Have any of you folks ever done a similar thing?
Thanks
Cary

do you mean to boot your old laptop with the drive external?

- that is not gonna work because windows prevents booting over usb!
at least i don't know a workaround....

if you install it in a desktop and hook it up via an ide 2,5" to 3,5" adapter you could boot from it... but it won't be easy to recover the OS on it when hardware is completely different.

Thanks Polynurb- I had hoped to boot my old laptop using the external drive but will have to settle for having access to the files instead. This will be my first laptop surgery so to speak so I hope I don't mess anything up :).
