Is it worth it ?

Hey guys,
I am debating whether I should post this model on Turbo squid.
1. Do you think it will be worth the effort ?
2. How much should it go for ? What would you think is a reasonable value (perceived value, just you looking at it, without me telling you how much work it was)
It includes:
-NURBS model. Rhino4.0 3dm file including all layers (and construction curves).
-The Rhino file includes all materials (including studio setups and lights) that were used to produce the sample Maxwell images.
-The model also has a rudimentary engine (but it does not reflect the details of an actual engine. It is only suggestive)
-MXS file to produce the renders exactly as shown in the samples.
-3ds file for those not having Rhino.

Hi Thomas,
Sure you should post it, it's a beautiful model. The only thing is it's sort of a niche item. But that could be good too if someone needs an out board motor. As far as pricing, I would suggest comparing similar models for complexity, etc and use those for a guide line.
Hope you sell a bunch!
Cheers,
Ron

I agree with Ron....
you need to ask yourself:
who would want a very detailed boat engine?
how much would that person could be willing to spend on it!

Yeah, kind of too niche.
There is one here, though it is only in 3ds (and I have no clue how well it sells (or not):

Might as well put it out there. Couldn't hurt. Since it is niche, I would give it a higher price: $100 or more. Since there is not much out there like it, you can set your model apart from the rest. Higher price = higher quality. May not always be true, but that is the general perception. When I have to find something I need at high quality that I don't have time to model, I always look for price/quality of sample renders.

Thomas, if you're not working with the model anymore just post it...you have nothing to loose.
About the price I would try to not to ask for an excesive price because it's not going to be an exclusive object (more than one person can buy it, isn't it?) but I'd try to see prices of other complex models as yours (it doesn't have to be another boat engine, it can be a car for example)
And I wouldn't even care if someone is going to need/buy it, I'd try to think where it is going to be more productive...in turbosquid or another online 3d shop or in your HD?:P

mmmm.. lemme see.... $200... (remember you make only half !)
I sell my bananas for $90 look at the price of other bananas mine is super expensive hehe )... It's a niche too.. so for an engine of that quality... $200..
think that way... people buy from Turbosquid for 2 main reasons..
- they can't model it
- they have no time..
(- a third option could go for lazyness.. and lazyness has a price.. lol)
In both cases, if they really need a motor boat engine, $100, $150, $200 will make no difference... (remember that no fool will buy "just for fun".. or maybe rich kids..)
(Put somewhere on it 200 HP, some news people might need it soon.. they talk more and more of these rapid boats with 5 x 200HP motors for drug smuggling from Maroc to Spain...) hard but true, right after 9/11, people selling detailed 747 were the only ones happy...

BTW, Iker... when I was selling my Bananas for $45, almost no sales... so I have it now on Turbosquid for.... $90 !.. and I sell about one/month..
btw, renderosity will take "only" 40% of your income....

I was meaning that you can't sell that object at the same price as if a company ask you to do it exclusively for them, because it's going to be sold at turbosquid to more than one person, but IMHO Thomas engine cost more than $200.

It definitely cost me more than that to make. Some of the sub-200 models there may seem complex, but on closer look they appear to be either low poly, or a bit rushed. So, $200 seems like a good number to me. I think I will go with it.

Hi Thomas,
What a coincidence! I was looking for a model of an outboard motor yesterday night and found a few IGES-files here:
http://www.boatdesign.net/gallery/showg ... p/cat/3054 .. They didn't seem to be put together allright though and didn't have any interior. I'd buy that model for around $50-70 but obviously not an exclusive license. I'd use it to demonstrate Maxwell Render for my students and renderings in general...
well, coincidence.. Very nice model btw!

Good grief

... they offer these things for free now ? Once you can get them free then "capitalism" goes down the tubes. Why would anyone pay for mine when you can get this at no cost ... ->

I second Max here.
It´s a sweet model, and Turbosquid is a well known store.
People seem to be able to sell just about anything there, so why not contribute with a high quality item.
