hi ..

i tried setting up my render layers in maya for mental ray, to render out different passes, but found out that each layer is rendered separately. one after the other. is there no way that at least the most common passes are written direclty when rendering the full render ONCE ?

it's so extremely time consuming having to load all textures and wait for caching all the stuff for each and every pass !

is that mental ray specific or a limitation of many renderers ?

sure, for special passes like special masks or passes for chroma-keying must be rendered independently, but the common passes like diffuse, shadow, spec and glows could be written at once !

is that easier in renderMan ?

it's just that i have to render many frames with just very limited hardware and cannot really afford multiplying rendertime nearly by the amount of passes.

how can that be optimized ?
