I saw some great sample of what people can do with this little program. But, I have problems, how can you assign different materials to the obj file that ivy generetor creates? I saw that is only one object, branchs, leaves, etc. what program do you use to assign branch material to the branch and leaves separately? or this job is done manually selectuing triangles?
thanks.

It is not easy with MXST, Ivy generator exports a .mtl file too so you have to import this obj to a 3d app first and adjust materials and then export to mxs or render directly with a plugin.
For example, 3dsmax shows one object but with a multisubobject material assigned, so it is easy to change this to maxwell mats.

I wrote a tutorial for using Blender and Maxwell with the Ivy generator. I'll find it for you.

Here you go:-

And the Blender only version:-

The texture pack I made on Thomas's website has my pre made mxms included, you can grab it here:-

Hope this helps,

Yes, is too long since I updated it. Have an ftp issue to resolve then will upload my portfolios again. You can see my renders in the Gallery index here.

That's why you need to split it via Blender. The format Ivy gen saves in doesn't give all 3d applications the same results.
Blender will let you import correctly then export as material groups.
Double check your options when importing the obj in Max.

Thanks Tim. Is there any other application than you know that will open correctly the obj. file and will export to maxwell with all the materials?
thanks

If you're on cinema4d, you can use a plug called "riptide" or such... that does the import job quite well.

In 3dsmax you can do it quite easily. The mesh comes in with different material IDs applied to the faces depending on the material they are supposed to have. You can just make a Multi-subobject material with three ids and one will be for the branches one for the leaves an another one for a second group of leaves.
Or, if you prefer, you can go to the modify panel, go to polygon subobject level, select the faces by ID and detach.
Also it comes already with a multi-subobject material assigned; go to material editor > get material > click on "selected" or on "scene" in material browser and it will be there.

Easiest way if you have Max:
http://guruware.at/main/ivy/index.html
This is a plugin that allows you to grow the ivy inside Max. I use it all the time!

It does work with 2008. I used it just the other day. I don't know about 2009, I haven't tried it yet.
