Hey,
These processors are compatible with current and not so current am2 socket motherboards! Not as powerful as Intel Quad but a very good price! Is it worth it if All I need to do is replace my AMD dual 4200 with this processor for £200 or wait? Here have a look

am2 socket? - don't suppose this is a 939 socket ? - can't keep up with the technology and the names
I have Athlon 64 FX 3500+ chip - but I suppose this is now too old to swap with a phenom on a an asus A8V mobo. Its about 3 years old now, I think

I tried to find the info on their site but couldn't see it - do you know if these will fit a socket 940 board? I have Opteron 280's - might be a nice upgrade from those.

I was living in hope. I suppose this now makes the upgrade simpler - just buy a new computer
Are there any cost effective mobos that will take 2 Intel q6600 or other mobos that will take 2 phenoms - I 'must to use up my quota of Maxwell licences

Q6600 is only for single processor systems. for dualproc systems you need Xeons DP. Here is a "cheap" solution for a harpertown 8core sys:
ASUS DSBV-DX, i5000V (Sockel-771, FB-DIMM PC2-5300F) 225,00 €
2x Intel Xeon DP E5430 - Harpertown 45nm!!!, 4x 2.67GHz, 333MHz FSB, 2x 6MB shared Cache, 771-pin boxed = 800,00 €
8GB RAM 2x Kingston ValueRAM FB-DIMM Kit 4096MB PC2-5300F ECC CL5 (DDR2-667) 2x164,00 € = 330,00 €
=1355€

Thanks for this, I'd say that's indeed pretty dirt cheap for 8-cores.

Anyone care to comment on this possible Xmas present to myself?
I would value an opinion on what type of memory to order to make say 4gb - 8 x 500mb or four 1gb etc

I recommend Vista 64.

Bubbaloo - unfortunately I use Solidworks as my main tool and it is not fully functioning on Vista, let alone Vista 64, while its as solid as it ever will be on Xp and Xp64. However I will double check as you ahve pointed it out.
