Landscape modeling!

Hey!
I've got an upcoming project where I will model landscapes from hand-sketched designs. Anyone got an idea how to do this in the best way? I'm used to do buildings and interiors...
It would be nice with a good landscape modeling software that has alot of nice trees and stuff included. Is this software available somewhere?

Is it just plain sketches on paper you got as references or have you also got GIS data ?
Depending on what data you got (sketches or the other) you can create those landscapes in various ways with many different programs.
Vue is one that comes to mind but also Terragen, World Machine, Zbrush/Mudbox (to sculpt the landscape with) and many many others.
Here's a link below where you might find what you're looking for.

It differs... Sometimes I get contours a cad-file, but often its just hand-sketches...
I can easely create the landscape but I'm missing tools to modify it with...

What program do you use to create the landscape?

It depends, but often I'm using Microstation InRoads that is a great road/landscape design software.
It works good but its too exact... I just want to do a quick sketch I dont need to produce drawings of it...
So what I want is a more estetic tool
Perhaps one way could be to just use Lightwave, create a flat surface and then just play around with the magnet tool...

i am currently working on a landscape suite of tools for maya.
but it's more about precise modeling of defined surfaces with section tools, automated contour-line-creation, slope calculation, locator-creation that indicate exact heights and so on.
maybe i'll add volume calculations once i know what we need.
it's still WIP and as said for maya...
i wanted to create also a fast-sketching series of commands that lets paint like with a magnet tool...
(i'm developing a workflow for efficient 3d-design for this landscape architecture office. well, and only NP-renderings (non-photorealistic) )
