Face looks like it's extracted from a photo.

Something odd going on there - might just be some bad post work.

Looks like a bad photograph... If it is really cg, I'm impressed.

Oh I think it's CG. I also think it's a shame that so many people think realism demands bad photography. This guy could have made something really impressive in terms of realism and made a good image too.

Average work at best - it IS projection-mapping, no matter what he says. The enormous discrepancy between the body/legs and the head-shoulders materials tells the whole tale. The quality of materials/look of textures have almost nothing in common. His "other angle" WIP shots of the face and shoulders have no texture/material resemblance to the final - in fact, they look like the legs and body do.
I use projection-mapping all the time for matte work, and it's extremely useful; it just falls apart quickly. It also has this sort of dead-giveaway drawback when combined with actual shader work.
When he posts multiple renders of the head and shoulders with the identical level of realism, I'll happily stand corrected; I'll keep the focus on the internal material imbalance between head/legs. But those renders aren't coming.

The consistent red-green color fringing in the image suggests heavy reliance upon a photograph (made with a cheap camera/lens). Projection mapping at best...

I'm more surprised how can people miss the fact that the face obviously looks like attached to this image from a newspaper. I do really appreciate the model but not the shader work/decent projection balance in it.
