general 3D help

I do a little 3D in an architectural context and as such know very little about intricate 3D.

I have seen the renders of the Dragon that was used in a challenge here a while back (the Stanford dragon, Buddha, Lucy etc..) and would like to get my hands on some of those models to try some object renders.

I am on MacOSX and have found MeshLab ( http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/ ) for converting the from the PLY format to obj or 3ds, but I need help...

Can I (and how) reduce the poly count on such an intense model. (It even almost freezes my Intel mac!!)

Thanks!

In 3ds Max you can apply an optimize modifier on your model. Don't know if you use Max, though.

Just 'Save As' .... .Obj or .3ds within ML ....

but before you save to the new format, ...run a couple 'Quadric Edge Collapse Decimation' via Filters> Quadric Edge etc.. then save.

Keep an eye on the vertice and face count at the bottom/middle of the UI til you get it to something reasonable for your system.

** ps. if you can't open the file to begin with, ....your on your own.

Well I suppose you could get someone to send a reduced file .... let me/us know which ones if you can't do it manually yourself.

** I know that some of these scans can get ultra gnarly in the triangle department. :)

Thanks guys for the suggestions.

No, I don't have Max, in fact I am pretty sure that it is not available on OSX.

I have read parts but not all of the MR manual, I didn't realize that I could filter the models in there. Thanks alot for that superma... er.. ivox. ;-)

I will try what you suggest and if I need more help I'll let you know.

cheers.
