Any way to fake displacement?

This is a noobish question, but I'm sure there's some way to do this. I use Solidworks, and I need to render a carving, which I only have a photo of. Trying to model it would be extremely difficult and take too much of my time. Is there any program that would allow me to displace a grayscale image into actual polygon geometry that I could bring into Studio? And oh yeah, it needs to be either free or very cheap- I can't buy a seat of 3DSMax just to do this.

..maybe this helps

there's an actual thread right now at the rhino section of the forum

a quick OpenGL example (both surfaces are displacement meshes made with low resolution maps):

And... you can download the rhino tryout for free (25 saves) - It opens sldprt files straight out fo the box.
