Totally off, but did anybody down in Madrid know this guy?

yes ... after a long spell as an architect he was one of the pioneer creators of the codes currently used by two well known render engines. His personal great contribution was to devise an algorithm capable of reproducing natural lighting under tropical conditions... which he co-wrote with his wife Jane Drew.

.....so, ..if he was around today, .... would he be cooking renders ? ....or frying 'em up ?

no kidding? ...and I beleived the reference was James Clerk M. But this way round the F makes sense too of course.
