Hi,

I've currently had a look into photoshop for students and found a really good deal! You get Photoshop CS2 incl a free upgrade to CS3 all for £99

My big question is gimp seems to do most of the editing I need! , I have no experience or knowledge of photoshop and wanted to know from you guys
what makes photoshop so good! Is it a must? For that price above im curious to find out and buy it.

Thanks

Since you ask that question, i'd say you're fine with Gimp. Most criticism about The Gimp are from users who have a hard time getting used to the Gimp UI or need CMYK colorspace for print work; For you that problem doesn't apply.

I still have my share of problems getting used to The Gimp, mainly the lack of life layer effects and scalable brushes.

If you can afford it anyway, get Photoshop and see how you like it. I find innovation has (unsurprisingly) slowed down considerably and Adobe has gone absolutely nuts with their european pricing. But it's like the most stable app there is and has tons of robust features and 3rd party plug-ins.

I still have small hopes in Pixel, but it seems to be terribly delayed right now, so you cannot rely on waiting for it without using something else in the meantime.

And Gimp 2.4 with Gegl, well that's another story for the future.

you can get the 30 days try out version of ps cs2 (cs3 try out should be available in a few weeks) and gimp is free as you said. so just compare them and find out what fits you better.
ps cs2 tryout: http://www.soft32.com/Download/free-tri ... 346-1.html

i've used ps for a couple of years now and i had to admit that they got me  ...i think for me there is no chance to switch to gimp. :D i have tested it once and i couldn't get used to the ui.
there are some importend features missing - if you need them: no real cmyk, only with 8 bit per channel (ps has up to 32bit hdri), better color management, pantone colors...
and ps has some really great features like non destructive editing (adjustment layers or smart objets and cs3 now has "smart filters" 8) ) and some other benefits that i don't want to miss...

...and i can't look at Wilber the coyote, the annoying mascot of the GIMP
