tomorrow evening, apple will announce their new hardware...
it's apple expo or something like that.
* * *
i heard it's most probable they will release these models in the Mac Pro series (not for 100% sure, of course):
three models:
1) dual dual 2.66 GHz Mac Pro (each cpu 4 MB L2 cache)
2) dual dual 3.0 GHz Mac Pro (each cpu 4 MB L2 cache)
3) dual quad 2.66 GHz Mac Pro (each cpu 8 MB L2 cache)
* * *
as we've seen so far, the Mac Pro indeed IS a very competitive computer, of course running also on win xp 64.
let's hope for the best !

Apparently the macpro octa has been ready for some time now, should be on the market during january. Curious to see the iphone presentation, not really convinced that Ives and apple can compete with the big boys in the cell phone market, will be interesting to see what they've come up with...

number 1 and 2 already exist, no? probably the octo powermac will be released until end of january, and it looks like a good deal, if the current price for the top of the line will not raise. the estimated performance gain should be around 50% when compared to the quad 2.66 ghz model - less than maybe some expect, but that's a huge jump anyway!

how do You know this «officially» ?
i think, the upgraded MacPros with changed chips to test-samples of the new Xeon 53xx series don't count, because nothing was optimized with these systems...
or?

jap, they exist. actually, good point, why to write that again... it's from this source...
i think it's because the pole position changes and apple updated their 3 products for small, medium, large.
well...

i read in the an other mentioned article on the forum that intel will sell two cpus for nearly the same price than one (i'm not sure if i understood this correctly) to be able to get some wind into the quad core market.
thus, the new octa mac could actually be announced quite «cheap».
when doing the math with configuring an octa DELL on their homepage (690 series), the price goes up enormously: around 6000 € with just the 1.6 or 1.86 GHz quad cpus... totally insane !
if apple will ship for a «little» more than the top Mac Pros at the moment, i'll say: DEAL !

probably only a matter of a few weeks... those 'pro' updates are usually coming silently, after the more glamorous macworld exhibition.
but the iphone is looking like a great thing. unfortunatley we in good old europe will have to wait until autumn. maybe mxcl will run on it? LOL

lol, good point...
That iphone is gonna create alot of embarassment for some of the biggies out there (nokia comes to mind). 200 patents, truly fantastic...

I agree. The funny part is going to be watching all the big phone componies scramble to copy it. Then even screw that up. Good design is complexity made simple for the user. It looks like apple has achieved this with their phone from reading and looking at the pictures. I would like to get my hands on one though for a true evaluation. Too bad I use sprint and not cingular.
