I'm currently running a machine with two AMD Opteron 254s that are in a 940 socket motherboard. I got this system instead of a the Xeon option because I was told that if I ever wanted to put dual-core chips in to the machine that the existing motherboard would accept them.

So, my first question is, will any AMD Dual-Core Opteron that works with a 940 socket motherboard work?

And my second question is, do I have to replace both chips with Dual-Core at the same time or can I do one and then the other? I remember reading somewhere that the chips have to be the same but I can't remember if I actually did or if I'm just making it up.

I've also read that both chips on a dual chip MOBO have to be the same.
A word of caution about expecting a plug-n-play switch though.
My situation does not relate directly to your's, but it could.
I had a 939 pin MOBO with an AMD 4800+ and was told by a variety of experienced people that a 939 pin dual core would be plug-n-play, with a change of BIOS. I checked with the MOBO mfg and they had a free download of a BIOS just for AMD dual cores. Easy enough.
It ended up the Compaq tweeked XP Pro OS wouldn't allow the new BIOS to be loaded. So I ended up with a new MOBO, power source (old 920 pin, new 940 pin), and vid card (PCI Express) just to make the new CPU run.

You'll need to get both CPUs replaced at the same time for sure.
Also check your mobo manufacturer and model beforehand [for available BIOS upgrade and compatability etc] , and your PSUs wattage...........this might need to be replaced for a more powerful unit too.
