CGsphere tragedy

Most of you knows that cgsphere site is really attractive and interesting.

So I visit frequently to see people's good and fun idea.

And sometimes I do rating or comment.

but recently, as I mentioned before that average of first page is lowering, there is only 3 works over 7.

That's why? for just jealousy? or someone who know that 0 is better than 10?

In my eye, there are so many great works and idea.

Maybe some days later, there is no work rated 7+.

It's a tragedy of CGsphere.

Sandy, ... it's true, ...but if you think about it, ...we're all subject to the same sort of biasing that occurs. So, ..with that said, ..from my perspective what we are witnessing is some kind of strange even uneveness in the general voting. You also have to consider that there might be an interest factor X curve at work too, ... meaning, ...that the initial novelty has to some degree waned or lessened and that will most certainly affect new participation and voting. (...more and more unrated entries)

Clearly there are great ideas with poor execution, ...and the reciprocal of that, ... weak ideas with outstanding technical merit. ..and of course there ones that are clearly great in both categories, but are hidden deep in the pile.

It's not really a competition, ...just a nice place to exhibit creativity and skill. ..let it be that.

A 10 to everyone for even taking the time ..... :)

I wonder if there is one guy going around voting 0 to bring down the ratings? If so maybe the admins there could employ a script to see who’s voting( if they don’t have one all ready) should throw off read flags if the person is voting a bunch of 0s

I will have to agree with Chris.

It does not really matter. It averages out in the end, because all are subjected to the same conditions.

Also the more important thing in terms of rating is the *relative* placement of the entries. So it does not matter if the top entry has a max rating of 7 (or max rating of 6 for that matter) ... it is still the top entry nonetheless.

It is strange though how in the last week, overall ratings have dropped, by a lot. IMO you shouldn't be able to rate without also writing a comment.

Didn't you implement this in the Maxwellian gallery ?

... the thing is that noone cares to rate at all if done that way.

I'm thinking with a popular site like CGsphere, people would rate anyway. Certainly not the same amount as simply rating but then again you would get more valuable ratings, instead of people just trying to sabotage it.

I rated all my Maxwell friends 10... he he, but even for other... the least I have voted was 2... and that's my absolute right..

Yes, sure. I agree with Chris too.

but the most sad thing is that we lost our justice.

In that site, as Richard says that "Your goal is to rise to the top, through the use of clever ideas, thoughtful execution, technical expertise, and dazzling presentation."

I think it's a small competition and we develop our skill and creativity through competition.

and about 'relative',
And we can rate 'relative' rating to some works. Sure, it's a justice.
But Rating 0 is not.
New entry is going down faster than oldies.
Because new entries are much more affected by low rating than oldies.
So from now, I enjoy them with "date" sorted page.

Anyway, I like them very much, especially "No Way Out"

ps. I'm so sad because I couldn't express my intention correctly with english for my poor of it. :?

They could add a standard deviation calculation.

This will give an indication of how "focused" is the grouping of ratings for each entry.

Then "the out of focus" entries should remain on top until they gather enough votes and the standard deviation drops bellow a threshold.

There are actually people who are signing up with multiple accounts deliberately to vote down or up people's work... usually to vote down. I was talking to a friend today who was watching the guy at the next station do it for 2 hours, just setting up hotmail accounts, going onto CGSphere, and voting 0 for a guy he didn't like. My friend called him on it, but apparently that didn't go very well... ;)

Don't these people have jobs? What a waste of energy.
