is it a good choice for maxwell ?
(precision 690 with Two Quad Core Intel Xeon)
With my licence plus is it enough ?
Thanks for your answer.

You'll need 2 licenses. If you bought one and got a "plusone" that's good enough.

Nicole or other NL people, if you're reading:

A long time ago we were told (I think Victor said this) that the definition of CPU for the 4 CPU license would be updated if multi-core CPUs became standard, e.g. if a 2-core CPU became the "normal" processor then we would be allowed to use 4 2-core CPUs.

I think it's time for this to go into effect. A 2-core CPU is certainly normal these days - it's at the point where it's almost the only thing you can buy, with Intel and AMD each pushing multiple lines for server/workstation, desktop and portable.

Indeed. I've got a friend that has just bought a dual core PC just for checking mail, internet and some office work. I think that makes a standard.

Dell isn't showing the fastest quad cores on their site yet, as a matter of fact, the faster dual core's that they're showing are probably faster than the quads, and are definitely faster on everything which isn't multi threaded.

Also, unless you needs TONS of expansion space, the 490's have the same spec's as the 690's but less expansion space. I had the 600 series before and just upgraded to the 400 series because those 600 series boxes are huge.

I don't think you could say that Dual cores are the standard until MS Word is multi threaded. :D

i think it would be a good idea to buy one. (well, i am thinking of it too...)

at the moment, orders of the 690 can be made, but only with the 1.86 GHz processors. as andrebaros said, the actual dual-dual systems may be still faster, especially for soft that is not multithreaded... as the standard windows calculator... (that may change with windows vista... :) )
why slower ? well, four times 3 GHz = 12 GHz. 6 (SIX) times 1.86 GHz = 11.16 GHz. i wrote six times because You'll get only 50% speed increase if You double the cores from 4 to 8 (around 6). (this is just a very simple description without technical details.. ) of course then many smaller differences have to be taken into account. of course that the 8 core version is 1500 dollars more expensive than a quad version !

i will wait for the 2.66 GHz which should be faster. by my «estimation», a dual-quad precision 690 should finish the maxwell render speedtest v. 1.1 in around 23 minutes. that would be a great time !

i'm a little dizzy, hope these words make sense.
