Hey, look on the bright side, the "liable to be tortured for unauthorized disclosure of buffer overflow vulnerabilities" restriction still hasn't been officially integrated into the eula...

Well daros you won't have an problems switching to whatever with your skills, probably lfs for your billions of nodes.
Generally i'd recommend MacOS as an alternative but i don't see Apple not pulling the same crap in the future. So give Desktop Linux a try and stick to Windows XP as long as you can, i use Ubuntu which is relatively idiot proof. The software problem remains, your favourite app may well not be available (yet) so you'll have to use something like VMWare or Xen.
It's pretty obvious that Microsoft is desperately trying to hold on to customers with politics rather than a convincing product, so like Bush pulling the 9/11 card for the nth time, don't buy this crap and invest in a better future.
Yuck, that i was afraid of. Webdesign is the main reason i have a problem with Microsoft. Google has greatly proven the financial weight and power of the web and that's why Microsoft's frequent attempts to control it really hurt.Note: Another group that's going to suffer under these outrageous restrictions on virtualization? Web developers, who just want to test their work under IE. Gee, thanks, Microsoft!

I have Open Suse on my laptop.
The gui is 100% user frendly and simple as Windows one.
The design is much better.
A control panel gives you a simple but powerful control about devices, configuration and administration.
Plug and play worked 100% immediatly.
Distater recovery as 100 times more efficient in Linux as on Windows,
System stability, expandibility, connectivity is not comparable with Windows.
Since many years we want to switch compleetly to Linux and the only obstacle was the compatibility with some 3D and 2D applications.

It seems that microsoft is also following next Limit core policy. You can only use two processors unless you are using their super dupper pro max version of Vistas so there you go.
