PCI express woes. Need advice

I have been in the process of building a new Woodcrest box and I've run into a big problem. The PCI express slot which I thought was an x16 turnned out to be an 2 x8. The problem isn't so much the bandwidth difference, but the complete lack of x8 cards.
I see that I have two options right now. One I could use an awful low end Matrox card to fit the x8 slot, or I can mod the notches on the x8 slot to allow the x16 card to seat. From everything I've read, the x8 card could then perform fine, but only at 8 lanes. (which is fine by me)
I'm hoping some of you may know of a good x8 card that I haven't been able to find. Matrox has been the only one I've found so far.
My third option is possibly sending everything back. I'm still looking into this.
Thanks in advance.
