More holes = salt

Is this a trick question? :P

ditto, you wouldn't want as much pepper on your eggs as you would have salt right?

Hmmm probably a double trick question...

I think single hole = salt

The single hole is a larger diameter than the multiple ones.

It gives you the option to make a little pile of salt on the side of the plate - something which you wouldn't normally do with pepper.... 8)

In that case might I add, that's an evil set of shakers.

These shakers are badly designed (not user friendly).
It should not be a brain teaser to find out which is salt or pepper.

I'd say the pepper one is rendered and the salt one is a photo :P

It could be either of them, they're both suited for both salt and pepper even tho the design may not be optimal.

But to leave a opinion.. the one with one hole is for salt, the other one is for pepper. Salt you want a small single stream of to control the amount better, pepper you can pour through several holes..

Well, many different ideas and they are all welcome. But, anybody has a valid reference and what's the conclusion?

Let's enhance the question:
Which one is the salt shaker in the following cases?

a) Both has same size and same amount of holes.
b) Both has same size of holes but one has less holes (not one hole).
c) One has a single hole and the other one has many holes.
d) Same with (c) but the single hole is larger in diameter.
e) Both has same amount of holes but one's holes are smaller in diameter.

For one, ...I never like those single hole shakers -- period. Do away w/that one ... too dainty. Need something more robust !

I imagine aliens hovering above the earth right now, debating this human dilemma.

I think you can't make a serious decision until you factor in the IOR differences between iodized and sea salt. :P

Amazing, ... it really is an issue ??

EDIT: I'm w/Thomas ........ bad design.

just some thoughts, you have to put them right from a to e)

salt is larger in diameter than ground pepper! since salt is hygroscopic, means tends to pick up water, it sticks to each other, therefore the small holes aren“t any use! pepper is a very fine dust, therefore more holes are better to spread it over your "whatever", if you would have one single hole, you would end up with a hill of pepper on a single place, so many holes are better!

;)
