If somebody knows, is there such a thing as fb-dimms which are also registered? I've seen fbdimms with ecc, but not registered. Does it have to be registered ram for the Intels 51xx?

One possible issue with the Apple machine, I might be tempted to get the 2.0ghz cpu's until their price drops, and later switch them to the 2.66 or 3ghz. Is that possible with the Apple machine?
Would it be possible to buy the ram from another source and change it yourself?
As I understood it, you can simply install Win64 on these Macs, no need for any virtualisation software?

Mihai,
Try posting something at
http://www.hardforum.com. There are some very knowledgeable people there. Very very very knowledgeable if you know what I mean

Yo Mihai,
There is no such thing like Register or ECC for FB Dimms. Fully buffered (FB) Dimms is the successor of ECC and registered RAM , is only available in DDR2 format (later DDR3) and includes an advanced memory buffer (AMB) onchip which replaces all ECC stuff. It is btw for the first time possible to do simultaniously read and write actions on a system equiped with 2 Dimms per channel increasing your memory bandwith by a factor of 2.

Benjamin

Thanks Tora, this Mac Pro is starting to look good

If you don't buy the ram from them, the price is about the same as if you built your own PC box.
deadalvs, why do you think Win64 would not run on it?

because all the drivers apple wrote are (i think) just for win xp and not 64 bit. i also think that apple have a lot better memory access so they are do not need 64 bit at the moment.
i can not tell if this is true, just know it from my brother which knows apple hardware and all the software stuff VERY good.
(plus he's sick of hearing me speaking about rendering all the time...
