Hi.

Does anyone know of any FREE "3ds max to Maya"-converter or "3ds max-import"-plugin for maya? It would be really good having one from time to time. 8) (I dont have 3ds-max, so export from 3ds is NOT an option.)

do you want to import .max file only?
There is an option to import obj file into maya or fbx

Two useful converters:
3d object converter http://web.axelero.hu/karpo/

if you do not have 3dmax there is no option for you. all the converters need 3dmax installed on your system, because .max is no open file format.
(it might be possible to convert some old .max files - version 5 maybe - but i am not sure about that).
but all this new and sometimes free .max stuff is not available if you do not have max (or a friend who converts it for you).
i know it is a shame ! (i have the same problem)
i hate autodesk for this...

if it is just for one specific model you might find someone here in the forum who is willing to help you out.

hope it helps !

I was looking at the 3dsMax9 specs and you will be able to go back and forth from Max9 to Maya8.... not the best solution but i thought you might be interested...

Hi

I was able to convert the scene to a format from "3d object converter" that I could import to Maya. Materials gone, but this time it was 2 materials, so, thanks for the help Jomaga. :D

ah, o.k..
well 3ds is an open format and many applications are able to import it. (i am surprised maya is not capable of it) so normally you should be able to even keep the textures on.
(.3ds is like .obj and does not have any appication specific information in it - like .max for example)

glad you got what you want !
