if by x64 you mean win xp x64 i don't think you have to do anything - 32-bit software runs emulated wiht very little speed loss:

"Thirdly, one of the indisputable advantages of Windows XP Professional x64 Edition is the ability of this system to work not only with the 64-bit applications, but also with the traditional 32-bit applications without any functionality limitations or performance drops. This is possible due to a special x86 Windows on Windows 64 (WOW64) emulator built into the OS."

I have that problem as well. Sometimes, even though the program may be at least 32 bits, oftentimes the installer or licensing software is still 16 bits.... which x64 dosen't allow.

never tried it on my own but I have a couple of friends reporting very good impression about VMware...
