Hi all,
This challenge is for all render engines. I would like to see images from anything you feel comfortable in (it does not have to be Maxwell).
Looking forward to entries from Mental Ray, Brazil, Vray. FR, FPrime ... any and all. (If you use Vray, then I might ask you for your settings

since I use it too)
The goal is ultra realism with the minimum render time.

hello thomas,
nice setup. also testing vray for rhino and need some comparison ?
.3ds might not be the best solution as format if you want to keep all your settings (i.e. camera viewing angle and DOF). is it possible for you to export vrml, best would be vrml2. you can keep camera pos, material, names, groups...
and i know you prefer 7z as archiv, (and i have this great programm thanks to you), but it also is able to do .zips which aren´t that badly compressed and many more people would be able to open it without further questions.
maybe i find some time to do this in maxwell and or FR.
cheers

Hello,
this is a screengrab from 10 minutes render with Maxwell on an AMD athlon x2 @ 2.2ghz:
I just scaled down your 3DS file, broke it down into LW layers (makes it easier to texture in Studio), threw it into LW layout to add a camera, and used stock materials from Studio. Since you wanted caustics, I think it's the kind of case where Maxwell is fast, since you save so much time for setup and caustics take care of themselves. I used fprime to preview the DOF as it's very reliable and almost real time, but I would not render anything with caustics using it. LW native renderer would be an option, but it would take so long to tweak area lights that the maxwell render would be over before i'm finished. Pure radiosity would probably give good results, but slower than Maxwell, and the DOF would be long to compute, and not nearly as good as Maxwell's.
The main problem at this point is the noise in caustics. I will let it cook longer to see if it goes away.
[edit]: after four hours, the caustic noise is gone and the reflected caustics look ok, though a bit noisy. Still rendering.

Hi Michael,
Thanks for the suggestions
Uploaded zip versions of: obj, 3ds, vrml, 3dm, step
Doesn't winRAR, or WinZip read 7z format ?
(I know PowerArchiver does)

hdesbois,
Thanks for giving it a try !
Looking cool

Shouldn't setup time be taken into consideration as well?

..that's what I was thinking. My Maxwell GI scenes end up coming out much faster with better results than Mental ray because the setup and tweaking time on mental ray is so tremendous. Even so, the Maxwell GI is still far, far superior. But Maxwell's fast setup time/ease of use is clearly one of it's great strengths.

I know about the setup time issue ... but ... in this test I am curious only about rendering component of the equation.
If you have time. Can you try it on Mental Ray ?

It's a nice test, I'll see if I can make something....
Btw, for anymore tests between render engines, I have some ideas of challenging things...I'll PM you and we can come up with a scene that tests the maximum number of things. I saw something interesting today that I think would be a nice test, I'll take a picture of it and show you.

Thomas, .....I'd love to help you with this, but as it were .......I believe we use the same engines, ....what I'd really love to see is ---the scene rendered through the new 201 engine. I am most curious about that, .......guess we'll have to wait for that one.
....but if you think it would help in any way by rendering anyway with what I currently have .......then I'd do it, but I'm sure you've covered that.
btw: I think if I use penguin .......I'm going to definitely win in the speed category.

Well, if you feel playfull and have nothing else to do, I'd love to see your results. Also, so what if you have the same engines ? What makes you think that you can't do it better and faster ?

Yes, that would be cool... Can someone send this to Brad (at Luxology) and see if he is game to give it a try ?
I think if I use penguin ......
ack ... I'd like to see how the Penguin image will pass as photo

I guess Penguin is out.
.....forgot about the photo part ....... hahaha
edit: ....okay Thomas ...., ....I'll give it a whirl.
