Please post here anything else (not relating to Maxwell technical matters)

That's easy Que, they first started their life as models and then someone selected the ear (or nose) on that model and extracted it as a vector displacement map and then it works as a displacementmap on steroids. :) and the fun thing about such maps is that you can extract meshes which overlaps eachother such as you can see in the ear and also in the nose. Try that with normal displacement, it'll fail miserably. :)

So, first modeled, then extracted into a vector displacement. Now I see.8)
But that means you can't draw a map in PS for example, like with usual displacement, right? Or how does such a map look like: is it graphical or some sort of numeric file?

You can't paint vectordispmaps in PS, unless you have some serious talent :D since they displace in all 3 dimensions. It's not like a standard displacement which only works in one axis Z, those maps are easy to paint.

You can scroll down to about half on this page and you will find a tutorial in some weird language about vectordisplacement in Modo.

what is funny is that in fact very few people use vector displacement... wonder why...?

yes but imagine you want to model 20 ears over a ball.. huh... what ya say...?

I am just wondering that because very few render engines support it.. and people exchange scenes between different apps all he time... so maybe why..

And I guess it takes plenty of time to render vector displaced surface rather than just render a model... or am I wrong?

I'd like to say maxwell should support it as well ... but we could wait forever :(
at least something to get decent grass and fur (I'm fighting really hard to get a furry carpet ... the material in the library for it works ok, but not great and it slows down the render way too much)

Max I don't see the relevance here, but i think DS never gave a monkey's about kids. All I know we will see a product based on the Blob engine From DS and possibly inside SolidWorks

They did it as a game for the kids of DS engineers... hehe..

I was looking lately for some Catia files converter.. and jeeez Okino's one is $1,500 just for the CatiaV5 module... phewww.. hehe
