so i'd be the license, the OS per slave... certainly only if there's noone working on that box... else there'd be more licenses to pay... MUCH more...

but how about future investment. such a box (10000$+) also has an economical lifetime of max. 3 years until newer computers are out for everyone that are faster.
i am a little bit critical concerning monsterbeast computers because they do not have a linear price/performance ratio but exponential. (20% more power costs twice as much with the newest cpus!)

this may be suitable for single users, sure, but even including the 1000$ license per slave with 8 gigs of ram You're just get much more bang per buck... of course with the ass-itch of networking and setup.

how far do Your calculations go ? with power consumption for example... ?
I haven't gone so far as yet to determine a KW/h price of a single (8, 16 core machine) costs , ..but it wouldn't take too much, ..just a spare moment. I'll try and get to that and maybe make a chart with KW/h variable that other users could figure just how much it costs to run their machine.

or is it also a personal flavour competing with the economics ? Yes, .. think about it, ... how comfortable would you be going to bed with ten 100 watt light bulbs burning in the house ? lol ... is it not the same to have a 1000w ps churning on a render ? Understandably the render is for a purpose, .. but it still bothers me.

in which direction would You invest for a multiple artists that even would want to render animations ? would You also recommend «the bigger the better» boxes ? With the way Intel is moving, I think that single boxes will probably replace the 30-100 node networks in the next few years(new ones, ..that is). The next generation chip from Intel is called Nehalem,....it's a scalable processor that'll internally have 16 to 32 cores per processor, supposedly. Back to scalable, ... ie,... the ability to realtime configure how many processors and which ones that should be doing what, where and when -- ultra flexibility for a server platform. Plus the cache is said to be scalable. Now,.. of course we always want all of them running at full tilt, ... but when your talking about wider server related duties, ...... that's excellent.

Just a note,... this whole Intel series from the 5000's to 7000's have been compatible, but these Nehalem's will need a competely new platform, ie., FSB, chipset, socket style etc...
It''ll be a totally new regime of ass kicking.

As far as Uber-machines go, ..... I have come to a new conclusion. No new machine til March 08. That's when Intel will release Nehalem chips with a new chipset X48(DDR3). Yes, there was an X38 that came with the Penryn's, but things are moving fast and it's old hat before it got out of the gate. The X48 is definitively been setup for FSB's of 1600 Mhz, so it's non-sensical to adopt the X38(DDR2) or any corresponding chip.

My assumption is this: I believe that QX9770 3.2Ghz Nehalem OC'd to 4-4.5Ghz will either paralell the performance of a Xeon(5000 series) 8 core machine and maybe maybe even top it... The 16 core machines will still be top, but the X48 chips will be breathing down their neck so close that it would be insane to spend the money building a monster 16 machine.

I was "this" close to building a 16-core and then a Penryn machine, but am holding off til March now. The BM's then ought to be very interesting.


ps. The new chips will also have new features (on-die ememory controller and direct chip-to-chip communication). I'm thinking this is going to be huge for us. We'll see....

Of course it never ends, ..but this isn't what this is about...

It's more like adopting a new platform that'll give the widest margin of effectiveness before it's considered truly obsolete. Unless Maxwell starts becoming less efficient / less optimized, then the new processors should take you quite far into the future with this particular software. This isn't an ego thing of just having the latest and greatest.

I have been doing some reading online about the Nehalem chips, but everything I am finding says those will not be out until late 2008 early 2009. Where did you see that they will be out in March? Or are you just talking about the motherboards that they can go in will be out then? I am very close on trying to make a decision about what I want to upgrade my home pc which is an old dinasaour p4 3.4ghz. I just want to make sure I get the most bang for my buck. Any thoughts?
