Hey all.. I was just reminded of this movie tutorial from something I read in the maya section.

Basically it covers how to use them. .and If you have not used maya's renderlayers in maya 7 or 8 then I would STRONGLY suggest you watch this tut. My jaw dropped when i saw how easy tihs is to do in maya.. and how non destructive the render layers appication of setting up Ambient occlusion and Spec passes it is. Your master layer alwasy retains your scenes original shading setup so you never have to fool iwht asssinging new shaders.etc You can just use the PRESETS and create your won presets... I was acctually a little pissed at myself for having not realized the power of this untill we upgraded to maya 8 since maya 7 has the same features..so I spent all that wasted time in maya 7 doing something the hard way instead of using the layers system.. BUt Im sooo glad i came acros this video... And hopefuly it willhelp someone here to understand how quick easy and pwoerful this can be.

The final render of this tutorial like he says is no Oscar winning render of a car.. But it more than adeqatly describes how to impliment the layers in a good example.
