Weirdness!

At first, this model rendered fine. Then I thought, to hell with it, I'm gonna bevel some edges. That cost me quite some time, as SU doesn't have a bevel toom. But If figured it'd be worth it. No pain, no gain, right?
The first pic's the original render. The second one's a test render I did after my bevelling orgy. Weird black stuff and weird lines showed up. Thoughts? Ideas?

looks like in the course of bevelling...you may have tweaked the wall a bit and now its not totally flat? and its picking that up.. turn hidden geometry on in sketchup and i'm sure you'll see lines corresponding to those in the rendering :-/ yeah...bevelling sucks! definitely necessary for close up stuff though...

Maxwell needs triangulated models, so the plugin will automatically triangulate on export.
Very “skinny triangles” will often cause problems, especially if when it comes to UV mapping.
There are several extremely skinny triangles close to each other that are created from the rounded corners of your bevels. Either the SketchUp export or Maxwell can’t handle this properly, so you need to help in the triangulation a bit. Add dividing edges in SketchUp so that triangulation can be done better. (You can then hide the edges in SU). It is more work, but probably the only thing that will help now.

This could be related to the “Black triangles bug”, but it looks different. I haven’t seen that problem in my files lately, so I assume Google fixed it at some point… Has anyone else seen the black triangles lately?

Thanks, Sheik. I already figured the rounded bevels had something to do it. So I started to redo everything.
Ran a test render. Everything looks fine now. Another thing learned!
Them bevels really add a certain "je ne sais quoi". Lots a work, but it pays.

Easiest way to fix it!
Double click on the large face (selecting faces and bounding edges), single shift+click on the face to deselect face > unsoften edges, easy!

Really? Cool! Thanks, Richard.

The SketchyBevel 0.1 plug-in has been released:

It sounds like it might be a bit buggy, but it looks like a great start.

Tried it, and while it's not quite perfect yet, it's already a great timesaver.
Them Ruby boys rock.
