...I think I'm doing this right, but its just not working for me..
create a material in sketchup with the same name as the mxm (the .mxm is not needed in the sketchup material name, correct?) and simply link to the materials database and enable automxm?
I keep just getting the sketchup material..I am using 1.1 and the new plugin on a pc...

That sounds as you are doing it correctly.
It is working fine here.
If you have a mxm named test.mxm (in any subfolder of the folder you define in the plugin). Make a su material material and name it; test. Enable automxm and export.
Open the mxs in studio. Check if it really isn't swapped. Do you se the su material names?

i'll give that a try, sheik..thanks.
i'm having problems with manually attaching an mxm to a face as well....its working for the glass in the scene..but the floor will not show up no matter what material i select... is it possible there is a scale issue?

Mate have you applied a texture to the floor to provide a scale for the MXM to stick to?
I find if you don't apply a texture and scale it correctly to the SU model prior to export the MXM may be applied but the textures so small that they seem not to be there yet they are! I admit that I'm not certain if this is a unit issue and testing that would be interesting, meaning if you use metres as your model unit are MXM scaled 1:1 applied to a 1metre scale? Hmmm?

i'm having exact same issue with 1.1....textures won't show up... seems to be a scale problem.. Haven't tried with automxm off...will test it too asap

..think its a 1.1 issue or an issue with the new plugin?

Are you not getting any textures in the renders, does it render black or just a plain colour?
Did you open the file in Studio to check if the materials are really the correct mxm swapped materials, or are they default SketchUp materials? Do you see the SU material names in Studio?

Look at the
render options tab when your render is in progress, on the right side there is a box that says
disable bitmaps. Is it unchecked?
Do the same mxm materials work when you assign them to faces, and you loose the maps only when using automxm?
Look at the file in Studio:
