I'm not sure I understand your question. In SU you apply textures with the bucket, which I'm sure you know. If you want to use the MW plugin, select the surface, go to "plugin", "maxwell export", "set diffuse."

As for glass there is no list that I know of. Search this forum.

Thats not a problem i have come accross - what version of su are you using?

I'm using su 5 - it may be an issue with su4 and compatibility with the plugin

Hey nong,

I'm not getting this either. Like I said, if I select and highlight the surfaces and "set diffuse" or "set plastic" or whatever, it works.

When you select a surface and "check material" within the MW menu, does it say "Diffuse Material?"

yes its something to do with the way su stores the that info. Somewhere in the su forum section pavol explains this - it may be worth trawling through and reading it.

I had some trouble with setting material type to groups. This is what Pavol explained to me:
This is how material specification in SketchUp works - there are different levels you can apply the material on and the lower level takes precedence. In other words - if you apply material on face level, than you cannot override this material on the group/component instance level. On the other hand - if you do not have material applied at the face level than material specification from group/component instance level is used.
It can be rather confusing, and I still sometimes get wrong materials in the renderings. I hope @Last will make it possible to make these material settings to the actual materials, and not to the geometry as now. Then we could make a materials library for Maxwell…
SketchUp export SDK (C++ based) does allow export of the model but no other integration with SketchUp is possible. It is not even possible to modify the model...Also access to some features (shadow info) is not implemented.
Ruby scripting is nice (it actually enables more functionality that the export SDK) but it is very limiting when it comes to UI - that is a major roadblock when it comes to material manager.
The whole subsystem of materials/material manager in SketchUp is "closed". There is no way to access it - the best we can do (and we are doing that) is to access materials on the model level.
Please let @Last know they should make some changes ASAP.

have you tried using the plugins/maxwell export/ maps/ ...pick map option? If I understand you correctly, you are trying to apply a SU map to a maxwell material which as far as I know wont work. You would need to apply a map within the maxwell dialog in order for it to be shown when rendered.

Ggordge,
The map assigned to the SU material can be used for one map type in the Maxwell settings. The first option in the maps-set maps dialog “SketchUp Map type” defines for witch type you want to use it, so selecting Bumping there uses the SU map as bump map. The other map types have to be assigned separately by maps- pick XXX map and selecting a file.
(The thing that was confusing me was when I first selected a diffuse map and then changed the SU map type to bump I “lost” the diffuse map from the rendering and it has to be re-assigned… You can’t see what map is assigned afterwards).

To avoid confusion I suggest the maps UI should be changed to something like this:
Image
Not Available indicates this map type can not be used with the selected Maxwell material type.

… Actually it would make sense to move the whole map thing to material settings, like it is in the other plug-ins, so you could have only the map types available for the specific material type visible.
Add a similar possibility to use SketchUp colours or specify a new one and you can now set all Maxwell settings independently of SU. Add a possibility to save the Maxwell settings in a separate library, (and to get them from the library), and we can have some kind of materials library after all. (This is still not optimal as using two separate materials & libraries simultaneously can be confusing, but I think it would be an acceptable workaround). You could change “Check Material Type” to “Edit Material” witch would open the material settings for that specific material, without the need for the user to know what type has been set for it.
If we can go one step further there could be a Ruby script that checks the SU materials used in the model and automatically connects them to Maxwell materials by matching names.
The “standalone MXS editor” will have a materials library we could use for this, right?
Pavol, do you think this is possible?

Thanks Sheik... they say you learn something new everyday. I am a relitavely new user in SU so haven't done any proper final renderings in maxwell yet... will try this soon though.... thanks again for the advice.
