The Maxwell plugin isn't compatible with the free version, right? Funny I seem to recall this working before but it doesn't seem to work now (Mac v. 6)

Correct - you need SketchUp Pro to use the plugin. BTW - it was always the case so it must be your memory playing tricks with you
