when Maxwell saves out images it always overwrites the previous image. Why can't there be a feature to write a sequence with the number of SL in the name so you can have a history of the refinements as the images get processed.

You have macros if you want to do that. In this case, the macro is: %currentsl%

so if you use as savefile: myimage%currentsl%.jpg should work as you want.
