I have an older Mac Pro and am looking to get one of the new iMac Pros as an upgrade and then will probably get the new Mac Pro when that is released in a year or so if necessary.

For Maxwell am I better off getting the 10 core model with 3GHz chips, a 14 core with 2.5GHz chips or an 18 core with 2.3GHz chips?

Well, more cores = more speed,

The 14 and 18 Core Xeon‘s come with a big price tag. I also looker the iMac pro. Actually it’s not so expensive as it seems because you’re getting a lot for your money. But the biggest downside and a true dealbreaker ist the GPU. Maxwell, Vray, Octane and FStorm are CUDA (NVIDIA) only.

Yeah, I might actually pick up a used late model mac pro loaded just for the next year or two until the new Mac Pro comes out. I can get a 12 core loaded for around $5K.

That’s an option. But if you’re willing to spend 5K right now I would go for the 10 core iMac Pro with 64 GB ram and use it until the new Mac Pro will be released and then sell (if not happy) the iMac Pro. It’s always easy to sell Mac’s

The 12 core Mac Pro 5.1 is outdated in my opinion. I mean 2012 and now we soon write 2018.

There’s still the option of using eGPU. Somewhere in the forum is a post about a Mac Pro with an external GPU > eGPU. I don’t know if that works well. But if it does you would have a pretty nice machine with Nvidia GPU.

I'm still working on a 2010 mac pro! Anything will be an improvement!

your not the only one with that "problem"

I know some people who are using regular iMacs with 4 core processors. For the final render they’re using Rebusfarm. Of course, for scene setup with FIRE and test renders it’s not ideal at least for me. A 10 core would be a lot better.
