Working on a set of autumn leaves

I'm almost finished with a set of 24 leaves in total, from 5 species. This is a test render with only 3 different leaves scattered. Each leaf has 8 textures for both the front and back materials (front/back albedo, front/back translucency, front/back normal, thickness, mask). The set has the textures, MXM files and also specific low poly geometry for each leaf so it's not just flat planes. I've also made the geometry follow closely the mask of the leafs and that makes for almost as fast renders as if using no clip masks at all.

How do you prevent different kinds of leaves from intersecting each other or a ground plane, puddle, etc.?

This was a particle simulation with collisions, it's not using Maxwells scatter feature. I plan to make a few of these "tiles" which have leaves stacked on top of each other, and which can then be used as scatter instances using scatter in Maxwell or the Skatter plugin in Sketchup.

NICE! Can't wait!

Ah, ok. We only have Maxwell Studio and its built-in scatter capabilities.

Finished the set, I decided to also add a bunch of Sketchup Skatter presets to make it more useful. So there are 23 leaves in total, from 5 tree species. Each leaf has 8 textures (front/back albedo, normal, translucency, and an opacity mask and thickness), for a total of 184 textures

Each leaf also has a realistic geometry.
Set includes OBJ/MXS files of each leaf, and also a set of 9 "patches" in FBX and MXS formats (the MXS versions are used in the Skatter presets) of leaves which are simulated using rigid bodies to make them pile up realistically. These are great to use with your scattering plugin of choice (Forrest Pack Pro, Forester(C4D), Carbon Scatter (C4D)) to quickly create carpets of leaves, or leaves that pile up at the edges of sidewalks for example.

These leaves are gorgeous. Thank you for creating them!

Thanks! I hope to see them in a few renders in the coming months

I haven't seen any leaf textures with geometry where both the front and back are represented, and work with the same mask texture. Most leaves look very different from the back.
