Sorry for nitpicking, but not exactly same 
cornell scene with hi-res knot + default grass modifier
original render resolution - 1600x1600
tested on Windows 7 x64 SP1, dual Xeon E5-2680V2, 64GB RAM

I am interested in why the V4 render seems to be brighter overall and less sharp... are there differences in the scene settings or differences under the hood contributing to these differences?

do you test without grass ?

in these tests : V4 win two times and V3 win 1 time
render test in that order :
V4 - V3 - V4 - V3
V3 - V4
render test in that order :
V4 - V3 - V4 - V3
V3 - V4
