Double-sided materials inside mxs reference -> crash

Hi,

I think I found a bug. When trying to render a scene with a mxs reference which has a backface material applied, Maxwell crashes after voxelization.

I discovered while rendering from 3dsmax but it also happens from Maxwell Studio.

Can you share a scene please? I can't confirm, rendering fine here.

Here it goes: https://mega.co.nz/#!k4VjzDAB!Fee_2SdrD ... Hmtzkm9Tac

It's a tree. Load it as mxs reference in any scene. Let's see if it works on your computer.

I have the same problem. I thought it would be related to the sketchup plugin so i posted it here first: http://www.maxwellrender.com/forum/view ... 05&t=42175

Tree with backface material exported from Max as mxs and referenced in sketchup -> crash at "processing geometry" or "start rendering"
Not every time but maybe 3 out of 4 times i press the render button. Network rendering with maybe 10 nodes is nearly impossible because always half of the nodes is crashing.

(Win7 x64; Maxwell v3.0.1, SKP plugin v3.0.5, Max plugin v3.0.29)

edit: i have isolated the leaves now and could send you the files if you need it.

Yes please, as simple as scene as possible helps tremendously when debugging. But I will test the two scenes you've sent also.

Fernando, I'm missing ".......reflect_back" map in your scene so I can't render it.

I just saw that you are using SSS with thickness map, have you tried to see if you change that material, maybe without using a thickness map, without SSS etc. to try and narrow down the cause? It may be that it's not simply any material applied to the back face.

Thank you both for the files, it seems it has nothing to do with the complexity of the material which is a good sign. I replaced both mats with a simple red/blue diffuse mats, and it's still crashing or behaving strangely. I've forwarded the bug to the developers.

Thanks Mihai!

Thanks Mihai!
I have noticed another thing when using backside materials with thinSSS. Instanced copies of the leaves look different to the original one (left tree first row) - a bit brighter and less saturated.

Any news about this issue? (and the second one with different colored mxs instances)
I'm preparing some new trees and i would like to use two sided materials. :)

It should be fixed in the current early build available here www.maxwellrender.com/betas

Did you try it?

As for the second issue, it's difficult to tell from that render....Do you have the leaf material to share? Did you try just a very simple scene with one instanced plane and the leaf material on the real/instance one? I think it would be clearer to see what happens.

I couldn't install the new build until now. I will do it at the weekend i think. I will test it then.
I will try it on a simple instanced plane as you suggested and i can send you the material too if you want to take a look. Thanks!

Yes, it's working now. No crashes anymore so far! Thanks! :D
beta v3.0.1.3 (max 3.0.32 - btw. in max it shows "Engine version: 3.0.1.2" )

And this new build seems to be ~6% faster than v3.0.1 at this scene!?! Very nice!

Is this due to an improved alpha map rendering or something else?
