Hi,
I was trying to make lampshade, but I was always (no matter of parameters used in material) getting weird brightened edges.
I've made test to illustrate this, take a look (bottom of lampshade is open):

on fire it seems to be right:
Isn't it a bug?
mxs and mxm for shade here:

Best regs.

Yes, this is a known problem with Single-Sided SSS illuminated by emitters. Not even the preview engine is perfectly correct under all conditions but, in your example it performs better than the production engine. As a workaround you can render this part of the scene in Draft quality mode and merge into the final render in the post. Or you can enjoy my following method for creating painfree lampshades.

Thank you Tom,
It's indeed big problem, because thin_sss is used in lots of materials: ^leaves^, curtains, textiles, thin glass lampshades and textile or paper shades of course. If shades are easy to fix with material mask, leaves and transparent curtains can't be fixed at all. Still I don't know how to make lampshade with negative scattering effect with HDRI...
Do you plan to fix it in 2.x version?

Hi all,
We've been lately working on the single sided SSS and I can confirm that this issue will appear fixed in the next release (Maxwell 3.1).
As your scene link is broken, I've replicated your scene using your material and here is the confirmation.
Cheers!

Yes, the Single-Sided SSS now works correctly with emitters and the glossy reflections are also improved.
