weird stripes appearing in studio and on desktop, anyone?

did anyone here have strange white/coloured horizontal stripes appearing over the GUI and on the desktop when using studio 1.7.1?
i'm having this weird issue only with my newest macpro nehalem (2.66 ghz) with an ATI 4870 card.
so, the question is also: is anyone with the same card and mac using studio successfully?
would be very helpful to get some answers, because maybe it's a hardware issue...

marcus, did yo try changing some opengl options in studio?
i lost the link, but there was a graphics card issue on some nehalem systems in the apple forums...

eeek, was just about to splash out on a new Mac, same spec as you have Marcus, might hold off now
Do you get the stripes on your renders?
Would be great if you can post whether you solve the problem.

no, changing opengl options does not help... after checking all factors and combinations (i'm having this issue since the first day when i bought this mac), the edxplanations could be: 1. a particular hardware problem with my card, 2. an apple opengl driver problem which is related to the qt GUI.

ok this seems to be resolved - it was very likely a weird hardware issue with my ATI graphics card.
